In memoriam Henk Schultink

Hendrik (Henk) Schultink (b. Amsterdam 1924) was one of the leading figures in Dutch linguistics in the final few decades of the previous century. He is remembered with affection and respect first and foremost for his ability to stimulate PhD students, but also for bringing together groups of academics for a common goal, and for recognizing academic quality and promising developments in the field.


Henk studied Dutch Linguistics and Literature in Leyden with G.G. Kloeke, from 1945 till 1951, then was a ‘hollands lektor’ at the University of Copenhagen till 1956, where he was introduced to the ‘formalistic’ approach to language by Hjelmslev. He received his PhD in 1962 in Leyden, with a thesis supervised by E.M. Uhlenbeck, entitled De Morfologische Valentie van het Ongelede Adjectief in Modern Nederlands, in which he investigated the systematic relationship between form and meaning in the Dutch lexicon, with the elusive concept of ‘productivity’ as the focus point. In his subsequent position as professor of General Linguistics at the University of Utrecht he not only directed a growing number of young and talented academic staff, but also played a crucial role in the introduction and acceptance in the Netherlands of Noam Chomsky’s revolutionary ‘transformational generative grammar’, being attracted to it by its rigour and the central role of the speaker’s creativity.


As the supervisor of PhD students who were later appointed as professors elsewhere, Schultink developed an extensive national network. Specialising in formal phonology and morphology, he introduced many students to the ‘60s en ‘70s core generative work of Morris Halle, Liberman and Prince and Aronoff.


In organisation and administration, Henk was involved in the establishment of the Algemene Vereniging voor Taalwetenschappen as early as 1964, and from 1975 till 1982 was a member of the Board of Governors of the Instituut voor Nederlandse Lexicologie in Leyden. In times of continual cutbacks at Dutch universities, he played a central role, in 1986-1987, in the introduction of the national AIO-system for young, talented PhD researchers, and in founding LOT, the Landelijke Onderzoeksschool Taalkunde. This ‘school’ soon acquired an international reputation as a result of the policy of systematically inviting well-known linguists from abroad as teachers for one of the biannual summer or winter schools. The Schultink lecture, held at every LOT summer and winter school is named after him.


Henk resigned from his regular post at the Utrecht Faculty of Letters in 1986. During the last part of his university career, and in later years, he specialised in contributions – sometimes personally coloured – in the field of the historiography of Dutch linguistics. He died in Bilthoven on 7 January 2017.

Het is de Maand van de Filosofie. Een goed moment om ons te bezinnen op hetbelang van de alfa- of geesteswetenschappen. Want die raken steeds meer uit degratie, omdat het praktisch nut minder aan de oppervlakte ligt dan bij demeeste praktijkstudies. Maar juist in een tijd waarin computers ons steeds meerwerk uit handen nemen, zouden we veel waarde moeten hechten aan uniekmenselijke competenties, zoals taalgevoel en filosofisch denken.

Abstract

Interlinguistics is a discipline formalized by Otto Jespersen in 1931 as the science of interlanguages, i.e. contact languages tailored for international communication. In more recent times, the object of study of interlinguistics was put into relation with language planning, the collection of strategies to deliberately influence the structure and function of a living language. In this framework, interlanguages become a subset of planned languages, i.e. extreme cases of language planning. Planned languages can be done for very different purposes. Some languages are planned for art (such as Tolkien’s or Dothraki of the Games of Thrones TV-series), others for esoterism (such as Bala-i-Balan, a sacred language of a Sufi sect in the 15th century, or Lingua Ignota, by Hildegard of Bingen, an abbess of the 12th century). In this seminar the attention will be focused on the use of planned languages in educational setting: learning how to plan a language is a challenging exercise that reveals how much linguistics is needed in order to have a workable product. In particular, I will show two fieldwork experiences. The first fieldwork is at the Universities of Turin and Amsterdam with students enrolled in Linguistics programmes, The second one is a pilot experiment in the Montessori primary school of Milan, via Milazzo, where pupils (9-11 years) plan a secret language to be used for secret communication among them and to build an utopian country together. The fieldwork experiences show how interlinguistics can be useful in the 21st century.

MaartenJan Hoekstra (1975) is bouwkundige en taalkundige. Hij publiceert over beide vakgebieden, maar vooral op hun snijvlak. Sinds 1999 is hij als onderzoeker en docent verbonden aan de Afdeling Stedebouw van de Faculteit Bouwkunde van de TU Delft. In 2009 verscheen zijn boek Huis, tuin en keuken. Wonen in woorden door de eeuwen heen, in 2015 gevolgd door Dorp, stad, land. De Lage Landen in woorden. Momenteel werkt hij aan zijn promotieonderzoek Stedebouwkundig(e) ontwerpen in woorden. 100 jaar stedebouwkundige begrippen.


De Kiliaanstichting heeft tot doel het etymologisch onderzoek in België en Nederland te bevorderen. Jaarlijks organiseert de stichting de Kiliaanlezing over een etymologisch onderwerp. De stichting is vernoemd naar de zestiende-eeuwse lexicograaf en etymoloog Cornelius Kiliaan.

Workshop on Speech Perception and Production across the Lifespan - SPPL 2017, London, UK, 26-27 April 2017

Workshop Theme

Although the focus of much research into speech development hasbeen to establish when ‘adult-like’ performance is reached (with young adultspeakers taken as a ‘norm’), it is increasingly clear that speech perceptionand production abilities are undergoing constant change across the lifespan asa result of physical changes, exposure to language variation, and cognitivechanges at various periods of our lives. The workshop will provide anopportunity for interactions between researchers from areas of speech andlanguage sciences research that may be focused on different developmentalstages, e.g. early development and ageing. It will also discuss methodologicalissues, such as how to overcome the difficulty of developing tests that areequally appropriate for children, younger and older adults.

The fields of linguistics, cognitive science and psychology were forever changed starting in the 1950s on the coattails of the cognitive revolution against behaviourism. Chomsky’s (1959) review of Skinner’s Verbal Behaviour is one of the key turning points in this endeavour from which what would become the dominant theory of modern linguistics was born. Generative linguistics, often referred to as Universal Grammar (UG), has maintained for six decades now that humans are born endowed with domain-specific linguistic knowledge. In other words, the human brain comes pre-equipped with some type of innately determined blueprint to the general structure of language. Exactly what is universal and domain-specific with respect to linguistic knowledge has been the matter of debate and changing proposals over the past 6 decades, however, the core tenet of the generative program remains: at least some parts of language are provided by a genetic endowment. Although there is no question that parts of language are/can be learned in the truest sense, that input quantities and qualities matter, that social environment and interaction bring much to bear, a careful consideration of the preponderance of all evidence still “leaves little hope that [much of the structure of] language can be learned by an organism initially uniformed as to its general character, Chomsky, 1965: 58”. The purpose of this workshop is to present and consider the evidence that still points in this direction, while at the same time sifting through and seriously considering the rhetoric that in recent years has rejected the general tenets of generative linguistics. In doing so, we will examine the role of generative linguistics at present and consider where it will be going as the 21st century unfolds. The workshop features a keynote talk by Professor Chomsky and plenaries from 9 other renowned linguists, working on formal linguistic theory and its application to acquisition and processing in children and adult learners. The day culminates in a moderated panel discussion with all our invited speakers, where audience members can ask questions.

The fields of linguistics, cognitive science and psychology were forever changed starting in the 1950s on the coattails of the cognitive revolution against behaviourism. Chomsky’s (1959) review of Skinner’s Verbal Behaviour is one of the key turning points in this endeavour from which what would become the dominant theory of modern linguistics was born. Generative linguistics, often referred to as Universal Grammar (UG), has maintained for six decades now that humans are born endowed with domain-specific linguistic knowledge. In other words, the human brain comes pre-equipped with some type of innately determined blueprint to the general structure of language. Exactly what is universal and domain-specific with respect to linguistic knowledge has been the matter of debate and changing proposals over the past 6 decades, however, the core tenet of the generative program remains: at least some parts of language are provided by a genetic endowment. Although there is no question that parts of language are/can be learned in the truest sense, that input quantities and qualities matter, that social environment and interaction bring much to bear, a careful consideration of the preponderance of all evidence still “leaves little hope that [much of the structure of] language can be learned by an organism initially uniformed as to its general character, Chomsky, 1965: 58”. The purpose of this workshop is to present and consider the evidence that still points in this direction, while at the same time sifting through and seriously considering the rhetoric that in recent years has rejected the general tenets of generative linguistics. In doing so, we will examine the role of generative linguistics at present and consider where it will be going as the 21st century unfolds. The workshop features a keynote talk by Professor Chomsky and plenaries from 9 other renowned linguists, working on formal linguistic theory and its application to acquisition and processing in children and adult learners. The day culminates in a moderated panel discussion with all our invited speakers, where audience members can ask questions.

Over the last few decades we have observed a growing interest in using experimental methods to investigate semantic and pragmatic theories. Experimental pragmatics has become a flourishing interdisciplinary research area. Aside from behavioral methods, such as reaction time measurement, eye-tracking and acceptability judgments, researchers have become increasingly interested in investigating language processing at the neural level and by this means shedding more light on semantic and pragmatic theories. To this end, they have employed techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Although this enterprise has resulted in a large amount of interesting data about linguistic processing, the interpretation of these results remains debated with respect to their relevance for more formal theories of meaning. On the one hand, it often is difficult to formulate clear processing predictions for semantic and pragmatic theories, on the other hand, the theoretical interpretation of the activations observed with neuroimaging tools is not fully understood. As a result, the neurolinguistics and formal semantic/pragmatic communities remain still rather disjoint. In this workshop we would like to bridge the gap and discuss the challenges of combining the two approaches.

We invite abstracts for contributed talks and posters related to the workshop’s theme, addressing problems in semantics and pragmatics with experimental neurocognitive methods. We welcome papers presenting novel experimental results, talks covering methodological aspects of such studies as well as explanatory talks that aim at discussing existing data from the perspective of refined formal semantic or pragmatic theories.

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL, http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/), the institute of linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University, is hosting a research project entitled Dutch Syntax in Comparative Perspective.
The project will investigate the syntax of Dutch and its dialects in relation to the syntactic properties found in other languages. Goal of the project is to contribute to a general theory of natural language and language variation.

The candidate is supposed to carry out the following tasks:

  • Conducting original research on a topic in the (morpho-)syntax of Dutch and its dialects from a comparative perspective;
  • Writing a PhD thesis;
  • Submitting research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals;
  • Presenting papers at (international) conferences;
  • Some teaching;
  • Organizing and participating in reading and discussions groups, seminars, workshops within LUCL.

Selection criteria

  • A Master or equivalent degree in a relevant field (completion of the MA thesis before the PhD project starts, candidates near completion of the MA thesis will be considered);
  • Demonstrable affinity with comparative syntax and the syntax of Dutch;
  • A curious, enterprising and creative mind and excellent analytical skills, evidence of which should emerge from the MA thesis;

Terms and conditions

The employment will be for a period of four years (first a contract of 18 months with an extension of 30 months after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility) and must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. Starting at the latest September 1, 2017.
Appointment will be under the terms of the CAO (collective labour agreement) of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is set on € 2,191.- in the first year up to € 2,801.- gross per month in year four. The Département d’Etudes Cognitives at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship to work with Brent Strickland and Sharon Peperkamp in the field of “core cognition” (i.e. early emergingand potentially universal conceptual representations, such as animacy)and its relationship to cross-linguistically common grammatical structures (e.g. grammatical marking of animacy).

We are lookingfor a young researcher with a background in infant cognition, language acquisition, experimental linguistics, and/or cognitive psychology. The successful candidatewill have prior experience with infant (or child) research,and be able to work independently in a dynamic, interactive environment.

A completed PhD is a prerequisite. Excellent academic writing skillsare essential, and programming skills are strongly preferred. MABAR offers doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships for researchers in the project for two years with a possibility of extension, starting October 2017.

The MABAR project, headed by Prof. Edit Doron, studies the characterisation of linguistic discontinuity: the extreme case of linguistic change due to linguistic contact. Case studies include the emergence of Modern Hebrew and other attempted cases of language revival.

Description:


The Institute for Linguistics of the Goethe University Frankfurt offers full funding for 9 graduate students (E13 TV-G-U, 65%-part-time) who aim for a doctoral degree in linguistics. These 9 positions will be part of the graduate school ''Nominal Modification'', funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The starting date is October 1, 2017 and each position will be funded for 3 years including social benefits.


Expectations:


The students are expected to write a dissertation based on independent research and to actively participate in the advanced courses offered. They will be encouraged and receive financial support to participate in conferences and summer schools and to conduct empirical research. Internationally renowned scholars will be invited for talks and seminars relevant to the research topics of the graduate students.


Tasks:


The research programme of the school covers three major aspects of nominal modification: First, the internal syntactic structure of nominal phrases with regard to synchronic and diachronic diversity including typological aspects, as well as processing and acquisition will be studied, particularly addressing the problem of functional layers within the DP and the elements hosted there. Second, the external structural properties of modified nominal phrases are investigated with an emphasis on the phenomena extraposition, discontinuity and non-locality. Here, the main aim is to explore the factors influencing the choice of alternative constructions by conducting interdisciplinary research in relevant fields including syntax, prosody and pragmatics. The third main research question deals with the semantics of modification; here the focus is on the challenges for compositionality presented by non-locally interpreted modifiers. Furthermore, differences between various kinds of local modification are investigated; in particular, cognitive explanations for the overall preference of modification by intersection and subsective modification in general will be sought.


Members of the graduate school will be eligible to participate in an exchange programme with the Linguistics Department and the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania for one semester. The school will also cooperate with Goethe University’s graduate academy GRADE, which provides support regarding structured doctoral education and offers additional training, consulting, and networking events.

This project is funded byNWO, by way of a Vrije Competitie project awarded to Prof. dr. Henriëtte deSwart and dr. Bert Le Bruyn at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The projectaims to develop the meaning of the present perfect. We will collect data from 5languages (Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish) in parallel corpora, andanalyse perfect use in relation to other verbal tense forms both at thesentence and at the discourse level. Translation experiments will be used tocheck the space of variation in choosing one form over another.

In this project, two PhDpositions and a postdoc position will be available. One PhD position hasalready been filled, and the postdoc position will start later, so we arecurrently searching to hire a PhD candidate for the following subproject:

PhD2 – Perfect use indiscourse: from conversation to literary texts

The PhD will focus on thediscourse role of the perfect in conversation and literary texts, and will beresponsible for developing an analysis of non-narrative tense use. Data collection and translation experimentswill be carried out in close collaboration with the other PhD and the postdoc.The interaction, collaboration and sharing of data with the other researchersin the project is therefore expected. The PhD candidates and the postdoctoralresearcher will of course have the opportunity to fill in the details of theseprojects or expand them, based on their expertise, the data they gather andtheir own research ideas, in consultation with the two project leaders.

We are looking for an excellent candidate for a PhDposition in a research project on Senegalese drum languages. Candidates shouldbe able to carry out outstanding fieldwork with Senegalese musicians, and dotheoretical linguistic work on the relation between grammar and music in drumlanguage.

The project is funded by NWO by way of a Free Competitionproject awarded to the principal investigator Prof. Y. Winter. It is the firstextensive linguistic and experimental study of the drum languages used bySenegalese musicians.

This PhD project aims to develop a linguistic theory ofSenegalese drum language. It follows previous work done by the PI (Winter, Y.,Language 90, 2014). Candidates are expected to have an excellent background intheoretical linguistics or another relevant discipline. In addition, candidatesshould be able and prepared to carry out fieldwork in Senegal for a period ofsix months.

The tasks for the PhD candidate will include:

- Carrying out fieldwork among Wolof speaking musiciansin Senegal

- Embedding the results within a coherent theory of drumlanguages, informed by recent advances in theoretical linguistics and cognitivescience

- Presenting results at workshops and conferences, andpublishing them as peer-reviewed articles in international journals

- Taking part in documenting Senegalese drummingtraditions

LOCATION


Praha (Prague)--also called The City of a Hundred Spires or The Heart of Europe--is situated in the very centre of Bohemia on the banks of the river Vltava. There live more than 1.2 million people in the metropolitan area.

Thus, Praha is considered the centre of science, higher education, culture, economy and authorities.


The city is divided into ten districts. Each of them offers its own charming atmosphere predicated upon its rich history. A good example can be the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) known especially for the legend of Golem and famous writer Franz Kafka. Then, walking the Parizska street (said to be the most luxurious street in the city), there is the Old Town Square.

One of the most important squares of the city renowned for the rare Prague Astronomical Clock (Orloj), number of galleries, Bethlehem Chapel and a monument of religious reformer Jan Hus.


The next place of interest can be found in the area of the New Town. The Wenceslas square with the monument of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech state, is the longest square of the republic. Its capacity is fully used by various shops, restaurants, clubs and street artists. Also the renaissance revival-styled building of National Museum, which is now under reconstruction, is situated on the upper end of the square.


Modern art and architecture together with technical mastery demonstration are represented by the Zizkov Television Tower, the Dancing House (Fred and Ginger Building) or the Stefanik's Observatory on the Petrin hill located in the neighbourhood of the quarter Hradcany. Also Krizik's light fountain or Industrial Palace in the area of the Holesovice Showground are worth seeing.


However, the dominant feature of the skyline is still created by the Prague Castle and the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral spires. The Golden Lane heading down to the Lesser Town shows the tiny and colorful medieval houses. There are many bridges connecting the banks of the Vltava River.


However, only one of them is well known in the whole world--the Charles bridge. Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV promoted its construction in the 14th century. The bridge is 520 metres long and stands for a connection between the Lesser Town and the Old Town. It was built in the Gothic style as well as the St. Vitus Cathedral.


Charles IV was also the founder of the University, which now proudly bears his name--The Charles University. It is one the world's oldest universities and with 17 faculties, 3 institutes, 6 centres of teaching, research and development it is also the largest and best rated university in the Czech Republic. The students can choose some of the 642 courses within 300 of accredited degree programmes in the field of medicine, law, theology, pharmacy, arts, science, mathematics and physics, education, social sciences, physical education and sports, and humanities.


We are justifiably very proud of the fact that the campus of the Charles University is going to host the TSD2017 conference.

Languages such as English, German and Dutch have traditionally been described in monolingual histories. Accounts of the history of these languages often focus on their gradual development through time with special attention being paid to the rise of the standard language. The areas in which these languages were used, however, were also home to a wide spectrum of other languages, including regional varieties of the dominant language, immigrant languages and ‘prestigious’ foreign languages such as Latin and French. This means that speech and writing communities in most of these areas have in fact been highly multilingual throughout history (Braunmüller & Ferraresi 2003, Stenroos et al. 2012). These multilingual practices, however, tend to be rendered invisible in monolingual histories, and even regional languages within larger language areas are not always represented, particularly when the developing standard language is prioritized (Hüning et al. 2012, Schrijver 2014, Havinga & Langer 2015). At the 2017 Taal & Tongval colloquium, we aim to revisit the place of language contact in historical settings, by focusing on historical multilingualism and multilingual practices in language history.


In historical settings, reconstructability is a crucial issue. It is often difficult to find out who spoke which language(s) to whom. The written record typically prefers some languages over others, which only intensifies when standardization sets in. If we want to reconsider historical language contact, we also need to develop ways to reconstruct the sociolinguistic conditions determining the contact situation.


We are looking for contributions in the fields of historical sociolinguistics and historical language contact, with a keen eye for the issues outlined above. Topics to be discussed include (but need not be limited to):


the multilingual experiences of migrating individuals and communities, and the linguistic consequences thereof;

domain-specific and socially conditioned language choice in situations of societal multilingualism;

contact-induced changes in traditional dialects and standard languages, beyond the domain of lexical loans;

standardization as koineization, and standard languages as contact varieties;

societal and individual multilingualism vs. metalinguistic discourse prototypically focusing on monolingualism;

the role of monolingual and standard language ideologies in language historiography.


Abstract submission

Abstracts of 250 words can be sent to the organizers (rik.vosters@vub.ac.be, g.j.rutten@hum.leidenuniv.nl) before 1 May 2017. Notification of acceptance will be given by 15 May 2017. The conference languages are English and Dutch.

Building on the success of the previous conferences, the Institute of English Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, is organising the 5th meeting of Linguistics Beyond And Within – International Linguistics Conference in Lublin. The conference, to be held on 18-19 October 2017, will be hosted by the Department of Applied Linguistics, the Department of Theoretical Linguistics, the Department of Contrastive English-Polish Studies and the Department of Celtic Studies. This year the talks will be guided by the following leitmotif:

As previously, we would like to invite scholars with innovative approaches to linguistics viewed from a range of intra- and interdisciplinary perspectives. We wish to encourage all linguists representing various theoretical models and practical applications to present their contributions during both oral and poster sessions in the following research areas:

 theoretical linguistics

o phonetics & phonology

o morphology

o semantics

o syntax

 corpus studies

 applied linguistics

o language teaching & language acquisition

o pragmatics

o discourse analysis

o translation studies

 socio- and psycholinguistics

Each paper presentation in an oral session will be scheduled for a 20-minute talk followed by a 10-minute discussion. Poster sessions will last about 45 minutes when the authors are required to be present and ready to answer questions from participants passing by. The poster format is 100x70cm (vertical orientation). The language of the conference is English.

The upcoming edition of the LingBaW Conference will also host two thematic workshops up to a limit of ten papers plus one slot for an introductory paper by workshop convenors.

The deadline for the submission of workshop proposals is 31st May 2017.

Each workshop proposal must include the title, a 500-word abstract that summarizes the theme and goals of the workshop and the names, affiliations, and contact details of the workshop organizers. The proposal should also contain a list of five prospective participants. It should also indicate any special requirements you might have in terms of equipment.

Workshop organizers are responsible for advertising the workshop, organizing the reviewing process, and running the workshop.

The conference fee is 300 PLN (€80) and includes conference materials, reception, refreshments and publication of the proceedings.

The preliminary deadline for submission of completed papers is 31st January 2018.

CfP Workshop 'Cognitive explanations in linguistic typology' (ALT), Canberra, December 15, 2017

We invite contributions for the workshop “Cognitive explanations in

linguistic typology: contemporary insights from language processing and language acquisition“ to be held at the 12th Conference of the Association for Linguistic Typology (ALT) at the Australian National University in Canberra on December 15, 2017.

The potential of language processing mechanisms to explain diachronic developments and grammatical patterns in the world’s languages has long been recognized in the typological literature. However, processing pressures and constraints have often been invoked as vague processes instead of as observable behaviour and neural activity that may be amenable to empirical measurement and evaluation. Given the degree of maturity achieved by contemporary psycho- and neurolinguistics, a new era of a cross-disciplinary pollination between linguistic typology and these disciplines is warranted. This workshop will focus on processing explanations for the distribution and development of typological features, drawing on experimental work on language comprehension, language production and first language acquisition. The emphasis will lie on explanations that are theoretically well-grounded from a psycholinguistic and/or neurolinguistic perspective and that are empirically testable.

We welcome abstract submissions for additional contributions that either report typologically relevant experimental evidence or draw extensively and competently on the psycho- and neurolinguistic literature in explaining typological findings. Contributions that describe novel theoretical proposals on the relation between the distribution and diachronic change of typological features, language processing and language acquisition will also be considered.

Summer University Aarhus (Denmark) 2017: Sign Linguistics/Interpretation and Linguistic Fieldwork,

Aarhus University offers two exciting language related courses this summer, one on fieldwork and one of sign languages and interpreting.

(1) LANGUAGE DESCRIPTION AND LINGUISTIC FIELDWORK


This summer school course in language description and linguistic fieldwork will give you a broad introduction to the practical and methodological aspects of fieldwork, and the art of language description. It will also provide insight in the structures of two unfamiliar languages. The course consists of two parts: a structural course on a non-familiar language (this year: Warrwa, Kimberley, Nyulnyulan, non Pama-Nyungan, Australia) and fieldwork workshops with a speaker of an underdescribed language.


Teacher: Prof. William McGregor, with fieldwork experience in several continents and author of a handful of descriptive grammars based on fieldwork.


Because of the practical orientation, only a limited number of students are admitted.

(2) DEAF STUDIES: Sign Language Linguistics and Interpretation.


In 2017, the deaf studies course has two themes.

The theme „Introduction to sign language linguistics“ provides a comprehensive overview of language properties at various levels of sign language use and methodology. The other theme „Introduction to Sign Language Interpreting and Translation“ provides a comprehensive overview of sign language interpreting and translation.

The course will be taught in International Sign, with interpretation to English.


Teacher: Prof. Christian Rathmann.
