LOT unites about 400 faculty members and 300 PhD and RMa students and provides a meeting point to further national and international communication for the benefit of linguistic research and education. Researchers from the participating institutes share knowledge, work together on theoretical and methodological matters, discuss their data and research in seminars and lecture series and in collaborations of various other kinds.

MODIFED: Morphosyntactic Dialect Feature Detection Workshop | Leiden University | 20-21 June

We are excited to announce a MODIFED workshop organized by the Re-examining Dialect Syntax Network (REEDs) and Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities (LUCDH). This 2-day workshop will take place at Leiden University on Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June 2024.

PhD position

Two four-year PhD positions (100%) | Italian variationist sociolinguistics | KU Leuven, Belgium and University of Bern, Switzerland

The research group ‘Quantitative Lexicology and Variational Linguistics’ (QLVL) of the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven and The Institute for Italian Language and Literature of the University of Bern (Linguistics division), invite applications for two four-year junior researcher-position on a new research project funded by the FWO & FNS Weave program(Flanders and Switzerland):  MovIT  –  Moving Italian(s): Standard language change among moving Italians.

Conference | Critical, ethical, and practical use of AI in the language classroom | Leiden University | 13 June 2024

On June 13th 2024, the Language Learning Resource Centre (Leiden University) is organizing a one-day conference on the topic of Critical, ethical, and practical use of AI in the language classroom. The keynote will be held by Esther van der Stappen (lector Digital Education, Avans University of Applied Sciences).

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 13th International Conference on Third Language Acquisition and Multilingualism, which will be held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen, The Netherlands, August 29-31, 2024. The conference will be preceded by a doctoral workshop on August 28, 2024.

LOT 666 | Digital Tools for Sign Language Research

Career orientation programme | Free for LOT PhD candidates

Katja Lubina (LUCL) is organising a number of Career Orientation events, which are free for all registered LOT PhD Canddiates. The kick-off will take place on 6 may from 11:00 to 15:00 in Leiden.

Final #BreGroMMplus Lecture | Prof. Asli Özyurek,  26 April 2024 | 1.00pm

Prof. Asli Özyürek (MPI Nijmegen) will present her newest research results and ideas onsite in Groningen. The talk will be streamed online as well.

#BreGroMM+ offers workshops for everyone interested in multimodality research. A particular aim is to introduce Research Master and PhD students from the Netherlands to the context of multimodality and the ongoing activities in this field. LOT pays for their members’ travel costs!

Schultink Lecture Summer School 2024 | prof. dr. Birgit Alber

We are delighted to announce that the Schultink lecture during the LOT Summer School 2024 will be given by prof. dr. Birgit Alber (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy). The title of the lecture is: Crowdsourcing in language documentation – opportunities and challenges.

Registration open | Anéla/VIOT-Juniorendag 2024

The Juniorendag of Anéla and VIOT will take place on Friday 19 April 2024 at Radboud University (Nijmegen). BA and MA students, recent graduates, and PhD candidates can present their thesis or PhD research in the field of applied linguistics (language use, language acquisition, language teaching, language proficiency, or communication) in an informal atmosphere on the Juniorendag.

Registration open | Leiden Bielefeld Workshop on Comparative Syntax (LeiBieCos) | 23-24 May

We are happy to announce that the registration for the Leiden/Bielefeld Workshop on Comparative Syntax is open. The LeiBieCos will take place at Leiden University on 23 and 24 May 2024. The program includes a plenary talk by Maria Polinsky (University of Maryland) and two panel discussions: ‘Theoretical approaches to variation’ and ‘Methodology and resources’.
