Abstract:
"Perception shapes language and language shapes perception: Brain waves
reveal effects of native language on colour perception".
Pre-attentive modulation of event-related brain potentials index effects of language-specific terminology on colour perception. It is now established that native language affects one's perception of the world.
However, it is unknown whether this effect is merely driven by conscious, language-based evaluation of the environment or whether it reflects fundamental differences in perceptual processing between individuals speaking different languages. Using brain potentials, we demonstrate that the existence in Greek of two color terms - ghalazio and ble - distinguishing light and dark blue leads to greater and faster perceptual discrimination of these colors in native speakers of Greek than in native speakers of English. The visual mismatch negativity, an index of automatic and pre-attentive change detection, was similar for blue and green deviant stimuli during a color oddball detection task in English participants, but it was significantly larger for blue than green deviant stimuli in native speakers of Greek. These results establish an implicit effect of language-specific terminology on human color perception.
Additional information about travelling by bus:
Once you have arrived at Nijmegen Central Railway Station, the easiest way to get to the university is by bus. There are many direct lines from the railway station to the university, but busline 10, HEYENDAAL SHUTTLE is the fastest connection. It will take you to the Kapittelweg (Donders Institute), the Erasmus building and the Gymnasion, within 10 minutes, every four minutes.
For travel information you can check the 'Door-to-door journey planner’.
When you travel by tram, metro (Nijmegen has neither), or bus, you can use the same ticket for all the buses, trams and metro’s throughout the country. This ticket is called a 'strippenkaart'. Strippenkaarten can be bought at the bus, tram or metro station, but the cheapest places to buy them are at the train station, the post office/post office service centres, the tabaconist or some larger supermarkets. On most buses it is the bus driver who stamps your ticket. Trams and some buses have devices that enable you to stamp the ticket yourself. Before you stamp your ticket, you need to know how many zones you will be crossing. Zone information is given on the information panels at bus, metro and tram stops. Tickets are valid for a number of travel zones and for a specific time, based on the number of zones crossed.
