Some background in formal semantics.

But empirical data will be emphasized.

Course Description

In this course we pick a few linguistics phenomena in which syntactic, semantic and pragmatic mechanisms determine well-formedness in the context. We try to isolate the role of each mechanism and also discuss the way in which they interact. We will cover such concepts as compositionality, truth functionality, conventional implicature, conversational implicature, inference, and accommodation, among other things.
